About Karate

Karate is a martial art developed in Japan. Originally, it is thought of as a form of self defense, using mostly blocking, striking, and kicking techniques. These forms are still used today.

Gichin Funakoshi, the person credited as the founder of karate, standardized karate training. This enabled everyone the opportunity to train, regardless of age, size or strength. Thus "karate", a crude fighting style, evolved into "karate-do".

"Karate-do" is a term that translates to "the way of karate". In modern society, as the need for fighting forms diminishes, martial arts training now focuses on wholesome physical, mental and spiritual development. Therefore, in modern times, "the way of karate" translates to "the karate way to physical, mental and spiritual development."

This development occurs through sincere and constant practice. In every class session, karate training presents students with opportunities for personal improvement. Whether through the physical challenge of the techniques, the mental challenge of expanding one's span of attention and awareness, or the spiritual challenge of conquering the concept of "oneness," karate-do endeavours to develop healthy, clear thinking and productive individuals.

A true karateka (karate practitioner), is always an asset to society.
